Having Access to Information & Resources!

The distance of the outer islands from the main centers poses a real challenge of access to resources and valuable information. In a technologically advanced age, there is no reason why these outer islands should not have information readily available to them. But it takes efforts and leadership to prioritize information as necessary component of an effective and actively engaged democratic system of government. It is imperative that the people have the right information to make better decisions. We need an objective media to report on the news of the day, to question the decisions made by elected officials, and to provide an avenue for the public to share news. With municipalities scattered thousands of miles from the center of government on Weno, having a reliable means of disseminating weather and medical information to the outer islands.

Action Strategies:
  • Start a radio program on the government-run V6AK radio station geared aimed at providing information for the outer islands.
  • Partner with College of Micronesia – Chuuk Campus and/or Xavier High School to start an independently operated AM radio station with programming specifically for the people in the outer islands.
  • Design a website specifically for the people in the outer islands to disseminate information to the outer islanders living abroad.
  • Train outer island students at COM and in public and private high schools on Weno, Guam, Hawaii, and the mainland to serve as news reporters on the website.
  • Have a weekly update from the Office of the Congress via email, website, Facebook, and other web technology to share information about the outer islands.
